Assessing the importance of education 2

by 1stdawn

Education has two facets; 1) common sense and our experiences and 2) what we can learn from going to school. Today, young people are bombarded with one half of the book of life, the intellectual one. The other important part of learning is the creativity that is within us. To create environments where the intellect becomes more important then the balance of both the intellect and the creativity can create young people who grow up to be extremely competitive, withdrawn, without direction and living outside of themselves. In essence they have a lot of fear to be or do what makes them feel good about living life.

In order to teach balance, there must be a balance where systems encourage what young people want to do with their life. The system then needs to help them to get there. When young people feel they can move towards the direction they choose, they will follow through and be excited about making the steps. The basics are fine but right now systems of school teach more about "being smart intellectually" and forget that without the common sense there is no inner drive for anyone to want to be part of the system. Being smart is not a way of life, having inner direction is a way of being and accomplishing.
